The Marketing and Promotion Commission Report. March 2004

AE. Karakaya, MH Karol, K. Rydzynski

The Marketing and Promotion Commission was founded following the Brisbane meeting in 2001. Since then, in cooperation with AIM organized the booths at SOT (Salt Lake City and Baltimore), EUROTOX (Budapest and Florence) and the CTDC meeting in Guilin; has prepared a brochure and has developed the design of the IUTOX logo. However, nothing could be done in terms of marketing.
Actually, IUTOX has very little leeway in terms engaging in, and obtaining revenues for, marketing activities. We do not have any periodicals; and host societies organize our congresses. Therefore, we do not have the opportunity to obtain revenues from advertisements appearing in our periodical or on congress documents and from booth area renting at the congresses. In terms of marketing activity, we are thus left only with whatever opportunities our web page offer us. Under these conditions, "the Marketing and Promotion Commission" really deals with promotion only; and this is more or less limited to booth organization and preparation of brochures. Considering the fact that these two functions are largely fulfilled by AIM, justification for the continued existence of the commission is questionable.

It may also be pointed out that similar international scientific unions such as IUPAC, IUPHAR, SOT, EUROTOX have no marketing and promotion commissions. In the light of the facts mentioned above the structure and function of this commission (including abolishment and assignment of the promotion function to the Communication Commission ) for the next term should be discussed.
