A Message
from the President of IUTOX
Dear
IUTOX Member,
I am pleased to report that the arrangement of the Fifth Congress of
Toxicology in Developing Countries (5CTDC) in Guilin, China, 10-13 November
went very well. Although the number of participants was lower than expected
(280), most probably related to the effects of the previous SARS epidemic,
the congress was a scientific success. The programme contained five plenary
lectures, four symposia, five workshops, a toxicology education roundtable
discussion, a toxicology information resources session, two continuing
education courses, and poster sessions. We are much indebted to our colleagues
in the Chinese Society of Toxicology for all their hard work and their
gracious hospitality. We believe that the incorporation of the CTDCs
under the IUTOX umbrella was advantageous and that the next such congresses
will profit from this collaboration. It has already been decided that
the next CTDC will be arranged in Croatia in September 2006, jointly
with the Croatian Society of Toxicology and EUROTOX. The following CTDC
will be held in 2009, any Member Society interested in hosting this congress
should submit a bid for decision at the General Assembly in Tampere next
year.
The Scientific Programme for the 10th International Congress of Toxicology
(ICT X) to be held in Tampere, Finland, 11-16 July 2004 has now been
posted (see the congress web page http://www.ictx.org). The programme
contains the Deichmann lecture by Jouko Tuomisto, 5 key note lectures,
21 symposia, 12 workshops and 6 continuing education courses. You will
also find all pertinent information with respect to registration at this
address. Please note that the abstract submission deadline is 15 February
2004. Early registration by 15 February is EUR 450, by 31 May EUR 525,
and later or on-site registration Shawn Lamb (E-post); Ali Karakaya (E-post);
Corrado Galli (E-post); Glenn Sipes (E-post); Judith MacGregor (E-post);
Kevin Chipman (E-post); Konrad Rydzynski (E-post); Meryl Karol (E-post);
Paul Wright (E-post); Tetsuo Satoh (E-post); Torbjörn Malmfors (E-post)
EUR 600. I am sure that you will find the programme interesting, we look
forward to your submission of abstracts and registration for ICT X.
You should have received requests for nomination to the new Executive
Committee from the head of the Nomination Committee, Glenn Sipes. We
hope that you are submitting candidate names so that we can have a good
slate from which to elect the new officers at the next General Assembly.
An important decision to be reached in Tampere is the venue for the ICT
XII in 2010. We hope that your society will consider bidding for this
important event. Those of us who have been involved in arranging international
scientific meetings know that it requires a lot of hard work from a number
of individuals. However, arranging such congresses is a major contribution
to the science and profession of toxicology and is felt as very personally
rewarding.
