A Message
from the President of IUTOX
Dear
IUTOX Member,
I
am happy to announce that the arrangement of the Fifth Congress
of Toxicology in Developing Countries (5CTDC) in Guilin, China,
10-13 November is proceeding well according to the original plans.
We have, of course, been very concerned about the SARS epidemic
and how this might possibly affect the conduct of the congress.
As you know, the World Health Organization has issued measures
pertaining to international travel and presently recommend travellers
to consider postponing all but essential travel to several areas
in China, including Beijing and Hong Kong (but not the area where
Guilin is located). However, as a result of high-level political
commitment and determined application of control measures, the
number of new SARS cases in China has become markedly reduced during
the last weeks. Over the past six days, the daily number of reported
cases in mainland China has dropped to an average of 2.5. We therefore
expect that the SARS epidemic will be contained well in advance
of the congress barring any unforeseen developments. Many institutions
have at present restrictions on travel to China. We hope that these
will be lifted in due time so that you will not have any problems
in planning your travel to Guilin. Please note that the deadline
for the low registration fee is 1 August. Check the web site http://www.ciccst.org.cn/5ctdc for further details.
The Scientific Programme for the 10th International Congress
of Toxicology (ICT X) to be held in Tampere, Finland,
11-16 July 2004 has now been
finalised. This is a result of the recommendations of the International
Scientific Program Committee and the International Scientific Advisory
Committee from their meeting during SOT in Salt Lake City in March.
Our Finnish colleagues plan to have the Final Announcement
and Call for Abstracts
ready early August. I am sure that you will find the programme interesting,
we look forward to your submission of abstracts and registration for
ICT X.
During the Executive Committee in Salt Lake City we agreed to renew
our administrative contract with the management firm AIM. We have been
very
pleased with their services, hopefully you have had the same experience.
Due to the change in the job responsibilities for our Vice-President
Yuji Kurokawa, we have appointed Tetsuo Satoh to substitute as Acting
Vice-President until the General Assembly in Tampere next year. You
will have seen our proposed constitutional changes related to the incorporation
of the CTDC into IUTOX, we are looking forward to your responses in
this
respect.
We now have a redesigned web site (http://www.iutox.org)
and hope that you find this informative and attractive. Please
let us know
what you
think about the web site and suggest improvements by using the “feedback” button.
You may also contact us using the e-mail address: iutoxhq@iutox.org on any IUTOX-related matter.
Oslo,
4 June 2003
