A Message
from the President of IUTOX
We are now only about
3 weeks before the most important IUTOX event will take place, namely
the 10th
International Congress of Toxicology (ICT
X) in Tampere, Finland, 11-16 July 2004. I hope that as many as possible
of you have signed up for this congress so that this will be a success
and an important milestone in the history of our organisation. So far,
there are more than 1,200 registrants. It is still possible to register
(see the congress web page http://www.ictx.org). The scientific programme
looks very promising, it contains the Deichmann lecture by Jouko Tuomisto,
5 key note lectures, 22 symposia, 13 workshops and 6 continuing education
courses. In addition, you will be able to visit and interact with 43
exhibitors from industry and trade and service companies. Also, there
is a nice social programme and an accompanying persons’ programme.
Those of you who are coming from abroad may want to enjoy one of the
post congress tours either to Lapland, St. Petersburg or Tallinn (Estonia).
I hope all the Member Societies will send delegates to the General
Assembly that will be held on Wednesday, 14 July. Important items
on the agenda
are the election of the 2004-2007 Executive Committee and the decision
on the bid for hosting ICT XII in 2010. Another agenda item is proposed
amendments to the Statutes and By-laws. We are suggesting the establishment
of a permanent standing committee on ‘Developing Countries’ in
order to initiate, co-ordinate and oversee activities of special interest
to Member Societies from developing countries.
This will be my last communication with you as IUTOX President. As
you will know, the current President Elect, Ali Esat Karakaya from
the Gazi
University in Ankara, Turkey will take over as President in Tampere
for the period 2004-2007. It is with great pleasure and confidence
I hand
over the responsibility for leading our society to Ali. I am sure
the organisation will continue to develop under his able leadership.
I
will no longer be a member of the Executive Committee after Tampere
(if the
General Assembly agrees to our proposal for amendments of the By-laws,
that is!), since the position as Past President from then on will
be ex officio. The idea is that no officer on the Executive Committee
shall have the possibility to serve more than two three-year terms.
Being intimately involved in IUTOX affairs has been very rewarding
for me, both from a scientific, a social and a personal viewpoint.
I would
therefore like to thank you all for the stimulating collaboration
I have had as IUTOX officer and for all the good friendships
I have made
throughout
the years. I wish you all the best for your continued good work in
toxicology as a science and a discipline.
Oslo, 18 June 2004
